Appalachian Memory Project

Spring Creek

Madison County, NC – Volume 01

Told by lifelong residents inside the old Spring Creek School, now the community center, these oral histories capture memories of farming, family, and faith in one of Madison County’s most enduring communities.

Spring Creek gathers the voices of a small Appalachian valley in western North Carolina, where stories flow like the creek itself: steady, rooted, and full of life.

How it was made

Recorded inside the old school.

The Spring Creek Community Center was where residents could sit together, remember together, and help preserve the story of their community in their own words.

The book was shaped within Spring Creek, by the people whose lives are tied to the valley. It was created through the Appalachian Memory Project, with support from the Dogwood Health Trust Digital Opportunities Grant and the Spring Creek Community Center.

Inside the book

What the valley remembers.

  1. Oral histories from lifelong residents, recorded at the Spring Creek Community Center.
  2. Photographs from residents’ own family albums.
  3. Memories of farming, family, faith, neighbors, work, and music.
  4. The knowledge that rarely makes it into official histories: roads, schools, food, and community gatherings.

Made with the community.

The Appalachian Memory Project pilot program is a partnership with the Spring Creek Community Center and other community centers around Madison County to collect and archive oral histories and images from residents.

The first volume.

Spring Creek is the first volume of the Appalachian Memory Project, created to help rural communities record, publish, and keep their own history. The pilot hopes to expand to other Appalachian communities.

For the people who keep it.

For the Spring Creek community, local history collections, and anyone who believes rural community stories deserve to be remembered.
